His wife Nellie was concerned that his experiment with a kerosene heater would cause the house to burn down and asked him to move the entire thing to the garage. He did so and it was quickly burned down. He started a hatchery just outside of town and was involved in broilers during World War II.
Charles, Warren and Jack, his three sons, would join the business. They would help to grow Allen Family Foods into an integrated vertically-integrated company that includes hatcheries and feed mills as well as three production plants.
