Unveils 2022 Best Countries Rankings – Switzerland Is the No. 1
After a one-year hiatus, Switzerland has regained its No. After a one-year hiatus, Switzerland has regained its No. 1 ranking in U.S News & World Report’s annual Best Countries Rankings. The United States and Sweden were both in the top five in the seventh edition.

Switzerland landed at No. The country also landed at No. 1 in the open to business sub ranking, which evaluates countries based on how business-friendly they are perceived to be. It also ranked in the top 5 for a quality life. The country’s performance in these sub-rankings, along with eight other factors, contributes to its overall Best Countries ranking. Switzerland shines best when there is a strong business environment.
“From a financial and industrial point of view some of the largest companies intermediating raw material – oil – are based here,” Carlo Bastasin (nonresident senior fellow in the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy program) says. He also notes that Switzerland may be able to benefit from its neutrality during international conflict.
The six European countries that made it into the top 10 in the 2022 rankings are Switzerland and Estonia, both of which have joined the European Union to sanction Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. However, Switzerland considers its neutrality intact. Sweden was the biggest climber last year, rising four places.
Russia’s drop in the ranking (-12) from the previous year was the biggest in its history.

The Best Countries rankings and analysis from U.S. News are formed in partnership with BAV Group – a unit of the global marketing communications company WPP – and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. The project is based on a global survey in which more than 17,000 people associated various countries with specific attributes, ranging from “dynamic” and “a leader” to “cares about human rights” and “committed to social justice.” The survey contained 73 attributes in total and encompassed 85 countries. Four countries never previously included in the rankings – Bangladesh, Cameroon, Paraguay, and Zambia – are on this year’s list after meeting benchmark criteria.
As part of the rankings package, U.S. News and its partners explored Switzerland’s return to No. 1 overall, as well as how the world views Russia and global perceptions of “brand America.”
For its part, the U.S. moved back into the top 5 this year after jumping from No. 7 to No. 6 in the 2021 rankings. The country is at or near the top of several sub-ranking lists: It’s No. 1 for both power and agility, No. 2 for entrepreneurship, and No. 3 for cultural influence.
